I have a clinical diagnosis and take medication for depression. Literature does support excercise as a way to improve depression.

Be careful on this one as to whether the doctor “suggests” or “prescribes” exercise.
IRS Publication 17, Chapter 21 (Medical and Dental Expenses), in Table 21-1 (Medical and Dental Expenses Checklist) indicates that you cannot include:
Expenses for your general health (even if following your doctor’s advice) such as—
—Health club dues
—Household help (even if recommended by a doctor)
—Social activities, such as dancing or swimming lessons
—Trip for general health improvement
Be sure that you document that it’s not for your “general health” and that it is for your specific condition. Preferably, have your doctor prescribe this for you.
If it’s part of a formal treatment plot as established by your therapist and he or she is willing to document it as such.
If you get a statement from your DR then yes you can. It depends on what state.
