Heart Help From Omega 3 Fish Oil Supplements

Heart disease is one of the largest killers in the United States. Heart health should be the concern of everyone. Diet is one of the most vital factors when it comes to heart health.

The oils known as Omega 3 fatty acids can benefit the cardiovascular system, particularly among people diagnosed with coronary artery disease.

Two of the Omega 3 fatty acids which have been shown to have cardiovascular benefit are docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). These Omega 3 fatty acids are generally found in fish oils. The best source of DHA and EPA are coldwater fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and tuna. Omega 3 fish oil supplements also provide Omega 3 fatty acids.

Several large trials have demonstrated the positive benefits associated with omega-3 fatty acids, either from oily fish or fish oil capsules.

One of these trials showed reductions in cardiovascular events of 19 percent to 45 percent. These results indicate that intake of Omega 3 fatty acids, either from eating fish or fish oil supplements, should be increased, especially for those who have or are at risk from coronary artery disease.

People diagnosed with coronary artery disease should consume about 1 gram per day. People without any disease should consume at least 500 milligrams per day.

Patients diagnosed with high triglyceride levels can benefit from treatment with 3 to 4 grams daily of DHA and EPA. Research has shown that this dosage lowers triglyceride levels by 20 to 50 percent.

About two meals of oily fish can provide 400 to 500 mg of DHA and EPA. Patients who need to consume higher levels of these fatty-acids may choose to use fish oil supplements to reach these targets.

Combining the consumption of fish oil with the use of cholesterol-lowering medications called statins is also effective. Combination therapy of Omega 3 fatty acids and a statin is a safe and effective way to improve lipid levels. This improves cardiovascular health beyond the benefits provided by statin therapy alone.

Omega 3 fish oil supplements are produces from the raw fish oil using a process called micro distillation which concentrates the Omega 3 fats and eliminates the impurities such as mercury. The resulting product is pure, concentrated and simple to take.

The only observed side effects include nausea, upset stomach and a “fishy burp.” Taking the supplement at bedtime or with meals, keeping fish oil capsules in the freezer or using enteric-coated supplements may help reduce burping and upset stomach symptoms.

Discuss the use of Omega 3 fish oil supplements with your doctor to ensure that there are no conflicts with currently used medication.

When purchasing an Omega 3 supplement choose the product that has the highest concentration and the lowest level of impurities. This information should be printed on the packaging. Avoid products that do not have this information.
