Fuld War Game 2009: The Battle for Healthcare Information

The Battle for Healthcare Information, held in New York City on April 3, 2009, is the fifth national war game championship organized and run by Fuld & Company, the global leader in competitive intelligence. In this public war game event, four top business schools predict the most prominent companies in the healthcare information technology and healthcare delivery industries will quickly go to make alliances and in certain cases merge with their rivals, to take advantage of the government push to adopt electronic medical records (EMRs). Teams assumed the identity of four major healthcare icons simulating and stress testing their anticipated strategies to determine who will profit from the adoption of EMRs. The Obama administrations injecting billion to kick-start this nascent electronic medical records industry just gets the players moving. It is no guarantee you will see universal adoption of electronic records in healthcare anytime soon. The teams included: Columbia Business School Microsoft MIT Sloan School of Management McKesson Northwesterns Kellogg School of Management Kaiser Permanente University of Pennsylvanias Wharton School of Business Allscripts MITs team, simulating the McKesson strategies, won the war game competition based on four criteria: the teams strategic insight, accuracy in presenting McKessons strategy, creative ways it expressed McKessons culture and goals, and finally, its ability to project their strategic vision into the future. Pilates Spine Stretch Forward Exercise

This video illustrates the Spine Stretch Forward exercise. This exercise is very excellent for articulation of the spine. Spine Stretch Forward targets the transversus abdominis, rectus abdominis and obliques to flex forward, and the erector spinae to extend the spine as you return to a long, neutral spine. Focus on articulating the spine and keeping the transversus abdominis engaged throughout the exercise. Keep the chin away from the chest and keep the pelvis vertical. You want to feel as if you are rounding over a ball, not lying over your legs. Modifications include sitting on a pad to release tightness in hamstrings, low back or hip flexors. Sit against a wall to better feel the articulation as you peel off the wall and press back against the wall one vertebrae at a time. Other props include placing your hands on a ring to feel resistance as you go through the exercise or a small ball to help you roll out and in. As a reminder, always consult your doctor for medical advice and treatment before starting any exercise program. If you should experience any pain or discomfort, please discontinue the exercise and consult your doctor immediately. For more Pilates exercises visit www.pilatesdigest.com.

Fit to Fight Depression

Depression is the fourth most vital cause of disability worldwide — and is expected to become the second most vital by 2020. Statistics suggest that as many as 1 in 3 of us might experience depressive symptoms during our lifetime and women are twice as likely to be affected as men. Depression is a major problem and treating depression a major drain on medical resources. Now, new studies in the southwest of England are looking into different approaches to the treatment of depression — approaches that may have a significant impact on this debilitating illness. Bringing together expertise in Psychiatry, Exercise Psychology, Health Economics and Primary Care, a collaboration of the University of Bristol, the University of Exeter and the Peninsula Medical School will conduct one of the largest studies in the world, into the use of exercise as a treatment for depression. Meanwhile, a parallel study at the University of Bristol will examine patient DNA believing that this may hold the key to more accurate drug prescription — matching patients to their medication according to their own genetic make-up. In the UK alone, depression costs the Health Service some £80 million a year in antidepressant prescriptions. The benefits of exercise and more accurately targeted medication could make a considerable contribution to the treatment of depression throughout the world.
